Garden and Exterior
Inland Southern California gives us sunshine nearly all year, which is wonderful for outdoor living and challenging for traditional lawns. The wise approach is a landscape designed around the climate, one that looks lush while using far less water.
Choose plants that love the sun
Native and Mediterranean plants such as sage, lavender, agave, yucca and ornamental grasses thrive in heat and need little water once established. Group plants with similar needs together so irrigation is simple and efficient.
The most beautiful gardens work with their climate instead of fighting it.
Replace thirsty turf
Swapping part of a lawn for gravel paths, decomposed granite seating areas or low groundcovers can cut water use dramatically while adding texture and interest. Keep a small patch of turf only where you will actually use it.
Water smarter
- Drip irrigation delivers water directly to roots with very little waste.
- A smart controller adjusts watering to the weather automatically.
- Mulch holds moisture in the soil and keeps roots cool.
Create shade and structure
A pergola, shade sail or well-placed tree makes patios far more comfortable on warm afternoons. Hardscape elements like stucco walls, stone planters and tile accents tie the garden to your home.
Think about fire safety, too
Keep plants trimmed, space them well and maintain clear areas near the house. Your landscape can be beautiful and sensible at the same time.
